Preparing Yourself to Move
Moving can be a very stressful event for everyone involved. Packing all your possessions, transporting them safely to a new home, unpacking and finding everything again can definitely take a toll on ones energy and sanity! To help ensure that your move doesn't turn into a chaotic disaster, here are some tips on preparing ahead for smooth sailing throughout your move.
- Create an inventory, clean up and de-clutter - Make a list of your possesions for each room, clean the dust off everything and get rid of old things that you don't use or need.
- Packing -If you plan to pack your items yourself, start now! Get as much packed ahead of time so you won't be scrambling at the last minute. Make sure you have plenty of packing supplies: boxes, packing tape, newspaper and/or bubble wrap to wrap breakable items, black markers to label boxes.
- Paticulars - Pick-up a change of address kit from the Post Office. Arrange for disconnection of utilities and reconnection at new location. Gather and organize all important documents and keep in a separate and easily accessible file boxes.
- Moving day (and a few days beforehand) - Defrost refrigerator/freezer. Plan simple meals for moving day to avoid using appliances. Make plans for care of small children on moving day. Make final walk-through of house, including basement, attic and closets, to make sure it's empty.

For our DIY packers here are a few tips to help you stay organized and get ready for moving day:
- Separately stack heavy boxes from light/medium-weight boxes, this will insure less handling time and keep lightweight and fragile boxes off the bottom when loaded onto the truck
- Tape all boxes closed and mark with the room they will be going to. Be sure to mark sensitive items as "fragile."
- Empty the contents of refrigerators, cabinets and desks. Remove small, fragile and valuable items from file cabinets and drawers.
- Disassemble bed frames and put all hardware into plastic bags that can be stored in a nightstand drawer to insure against loss during transit
